The Nambu Ironware Cooperative Association describes reddish, rust-like spots appearing inside a new kettle around the fifth day of use, and instructs owners not to wipe, wash or scrub them off. What builds up over the same surface is yuake — scale that the association says gradually covers the interior and makes the water taste better, its colour varying with the local water. Nihon Kogeido describes the white form of it as calcium from tap water, and credits it with a rust-inhibiting effect. Both sources treat the inner surface as something that forms rather than something you maintain.
English-language advice for this object is almost entirely about removal, and the tools it reaches for are the ones both Japanese sources rule out. The association says not to scour the interior with a tawashi or a cloth; Nihon Kogeido calls filing or wire-wooling it off outright forbidden, on the grounds that it puts rust powder into the water, and says sponges and metal scourers damage the oxide film on the inside. Detergent and abrasives are out for the same reason. So is leaving water standing in it, heating it hard, and running cold water over it while hot.
If the water does come out red, neither source reaches for an abrasive. The association route is simply to keep boiling: two or three kettlefuls at first use, and it is drinkable once the water stops clouding. Nihon Kogeido gives a stronger version for a kettle already in use — fill to about eight-tenths, add a teaspoon of sencha in a tea bag, simmer on medium or lower for around thirty minutes, and repeat two or three times. Drying is the same in both: no cloth, just residual heat, or twenty to thirty seconds on a low flame.
All of this describes bare cast iron. If the inside of yours is glossy black or blue it is an enamel-lined tetsu-kyusu, not a kettle: the lining is what meets the water, there is no oxide film to protect, and Nihon Kogeido says it is simply washed with water and a soft sponge. It must also never go on direct heat.
There is nothing to buy to solve this, which is the point of the page: the remedies above use water, heat and at most a spoonful of sencha.
