Asking whether a Damascus knife is “real” has an awkward answer: no modern one is, because the word stopped meaning what it used to mean.

Wikipedia’s article on Damascus steel describes the original as high-carbon crucible steel made by the wootz process, with banding and mottling reminiscent of flowing water. Production of those blades declined and ceased by around 1900, the last account being from 1903 in Sri Lanka. What is sold today is pattern-welded steel: several steels forge-welded into a billet, its bands brought out by polishing or acid etching. The article states that pattern-welded steel has been called “Damascus” since 1973, and that the term — although technically incorrect — is now widely accepted in the trade.
The second half matters more for buying. Wikipedia’s pattern-welding article says modern steelmaking has removed the reasons the technique existed: there is no longer a need to blend steels, reduce impurities or homogenise them. Pattern-welded steel is still used by custom knifemakers for the cosmetic effect it produces. So the pattern is not evidence of a better blade, and a plain single steel is not evidence of a worse one.
Which leaves the questions that do decide how the knife performs, and they are the same ones as for any Japanese knife: what the cutting steel is, whether it is carbon or stainless, and whether the edge is ground on one side or both. A listing that leads with “Damascus” and does not name the core steel has told you about the outside of the blade only.

Treat “Damascus” on a listing as a description of the finish, not of the steel that does the cutting — because that is what the trade now uses it to mean. Then look for the core steel by name. If a listing gives a pattern and a price and no steel, it has described the part you can see and skipped the part you will use.

A shelf to practise that on rather than a recommendation: read the listings for a named core steel, and notice how many give you a pattern and a price instead.
One thing this page does not tell you: how to spot a pattern that was etched onto the surface rather than forged in. That claim is repeated widely, and it may well be true, but I could not find a source solid enough to cite — so it is left out rather than half-said.
A specialist seller is the useful contrast. Hocho Knife puts the core steel in the product name itself — 33 Layer VG-10 Damascus, Damascus (AUS8), 101-layer SG2 Damascus — so the layer count and the steel that does the cutting arrive as two separate facts. Its own description of the material says the same thing this page does: a laminate in which the “hard and fragile core material is surrounded and protected by” the outer layers.
